The love Dianne Hall has for camellias and the civilised art of taking tea is apparent on every page of this self published book. The author, who with her husband runs Newmans Nursery at Tea Tree Gully, started the Topiary Cafe in the 80s. The straightforward recipes and helpful hints are interspersed with full page colour plates of cakes, colourful crockery and , of course, camellias. As the author explains in the introduction, the book is not trying to offer technical advice on growing camellias, but aims to show off the beauty of these winter flowering shrubs, relatives of which are also responsible for the tea we drink.
Quirky quotes from diverse sourses wuch as Eliza Acron, William Wordsworth and Charles Maurice Tallyrand are scattered throughout and historical and cultural notes on the many different varieties of camellias make for intresting reading while waiting for your chosen cake to cook. This pretty book, available from Newmans Nursery and selected stockists, would delight anyone with even a passing interest in flowers and cooking.
